Amazon.com:
When Alexandra’s mother is slain by an unnatural beast, shadows fall on the once-lush kingdom. Too soon the widowed king is entranced by a cunning stranger — and in one chilling moment Alexandra’s beloved brothers disappear, and she is banished to a barren land. Rich in visual detail, sparked by a formidable evil, and sweetened with familial and romantic love, here is the tale of a girl who discovers powerful healing gifts — and the courage to use them to save her ailing kingdom.
Don't really dig either of these. They definitely scream middle grade historical fantasy. Not sure if they are middle grade or YA.

Review: My Wonderful World of Shoes by Nina Chakrabarti

My Wonderful World of Shoes is perfect for shoe lovers, fashion lovers and people that just love to sit down and color! Basically it's good for all ages! I've been a fan of Nina Chakrabarti's books ever since the first one My Wonderful World of Fashion came out! They are very multi-use, you can look at them as an art book or a coffee table book or you can literally sit down and color in them!
Beyond all that I really like Nina's style of illustration, sense of humor and even just the way the books are designed, I'm a sucker for cardboard and sparkly metallics and of course pink!
So obviously I'm a huge fan of her work I think they make great gifts for girls of any age and just make you smile! Since I have all her books my only issue with My Wonderful World of Shoes would be that I wish it had more of the interaction and variety of prompts that her previous books have. I get that this is solely (ha!) focused on shoes but I would have loved to have seem a page filled with a shoe pattern or someone wearing the shoes, some variety in the layout. But overall this book is definitely still a win!
Here's a page I colored (yes I still like to color!):

Hart of Dixie falls to pieces

To contact us Click HERE
The CW's Hart of Dixie ended its freshman run last spring with Dr. Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) in bed with Wade (Wilson Bethal), whom she finds annoying, but who has harbored a crush on her for some time. Then George (Scott Porter) cancels his wedding to be with Zoe, leaving the good doctor in quite the pickle.

Season two picks up the next morning with "I Fall to Pieces." George is disappointed to hear that Zoe needs some time to think, as she does admit to having certain feelings for Wade, too. Wade, for his part, falls back into his immature ways, pretending Zoe is just a one-night stand for him and insulting her, and professing not to care if she dates George. Zoe is torn, knowing Wade is just covering for insecurity, but also not sure George is ready to jump into another relationship so soon after his long-term one ends.

Hart of Dixie solves this problem much as many shows before it have. Zoe chooses no one. She wants George to heal and Wade to grown up before getting seriously involved with either one. The thing is, though, no one is perfect, and many men have trouble articulating, or even knowing, their feelings. While both could definitely be in better positions than they are, Zoe may be waiting for something that will never happen.

It's also a cop out. It leaves the series room to try each of the three characters with more people before settling back into its love triangle. Television dramas must keep the drama going, and hooking up the main character with one of two love interests so early in the show's run kind of shoots itself in the foot in terms of keeping tension alive. So instead, the writers frustrate fans all over by providing no resolution.

Now, both Wade and George would make decent partners for Zoe. But until she figures out which one she wants, she can't commit to either. So Zoe's lack of choice is as much about her as it is either of the guys.

Interesting, Zoe's flirtations with Wade continue post-announcement. Wade may just be happy to still be in the game, assuming he had lost to George before even getting started. But knowing Wade plays the casual hand well, picking neither may open Zoe up to more casual sex with Wade.

Meanwhile, for Lemon (Jaime King), being dumped by George may be the best thing that has ever happened to her. She is a strong woman, and she discovered that while George was away. When he returned to Bluebell, she lost some of that, and by marrying George without ever leaving her father's (Tim Matheson) house, she risks any chance of true independence. So Lemon is sure to have a great year post-George, figuring out for herself what she is capable of.

The fact that Zoe is the one who helps set Lemon on this path is nice because there should be a warming up between the two of them. They are very different people, and probably won't ever be besties, but they have enough in common that they should be able to make peace. I look forward to it.

Also, Lavon (Cress Williams) is surprised by the arrival of his ex, Ruby (Golden Brooks, Girlfriends), back to town. Ruby intends to stay, throwing Lavon for a loop, and dredging up old feelings. This should keep Lavon away from Lemon for awhile, thus negating any interference he might have with her plot.

The only thing that rings weird in "I Fall to Pieces" is why Ruby becomes friendly so quickly with Zoe. Zoe is clearly self-centered and using Ruby to bounce rambling off of. Sure, Ruby might welcome the chance to stop by Lavon's house, but even setting that aside, it's like Hart of Dixie is forcing an instant friendship between Ruby and Zoe. For what purpose? Why not just let a friendship develop naturally?

Hart of Dixie airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.

"The Beginning of the End" of 30 Rock

To contact us Click HERE

With the final season of NBC's 30 Rock upon us, it's hard not to try to assign importance into everything that happens, looking for clues as to what the last arcs of the series will be, and trying to figure out how it will all end. This week's season premiere, "The Beginning of the End," leave ample opportunity for this (almost completely frivolous) exercise.

At the start of the episode, there is a fake out with Liz (Tina Fey) and a baby. Is this just a gag? The revelation that Liz doesn't have a baby the last we'll ever see of this story? Or is her life just in a really good place, and we can see how she wants things to be, which is what she will be working towards?

Jack's (Alec Baldwin) motivations are far more clear. Liz quickly figures out that he is trying to tank NBC so that he can be fully in charge of the network. It's not a terrible plan, but as anyone who has ever seen The Producers knows, one must be careful with this strategy? What is things backfire, and as terrible as the shows Jack is making are, including one in which he plays God, but can't explain the rules of God, what if they prove popular? As with the real life NBC, being a last place network, there isn't much to lose.

So is this how TGS will meet its demise? A victim of Jack's machinations? Doomed to be forced off the air as it is replaced by even more drivel? Or will the show within a show prove terrible enough to fit within Jack's new business model? Or maybe Jack will have the chance to truly rebrand the network the way he would like, and TGS just don't fit into that outlook? Though Jack will surely have a job offer for Liz to replace the one she will lose.

As serious as Jack might get, there is plenty of goofiness left in 30 Rock, still funny after all of these years. Tracy (Tracy Morgan)  and Hazel (Kristen Schaal) are warring over Kenneth (Jack McBrayer), Jonathan (Maulik Pancholy) is back at his desk, and Jenna (Jane Krakowski) is going to be her own maid of honor, after Liz fails to live up to the task. All of this is a recipe for more over-the-top shenanigans of the sort that has kept viewers tuning in year after year.

Trying to end any series is hard, especially one as original and creative as 30 Rock. There will have to be a sentimentality to it, and yet, 30 Rock is much more a comedy than a drama, never taking itself too seriously. "The Beginning of the End" demonstrates an awareness of this, and is definitely moving in the proper direction.

30 Rock airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

Glee suffers through "The Break-Up"

To contact us Click HERE

This week's Glee was heartbreaking, plain and simple. It was a sad tale of the dissolution of romance, splitting up all the major couples in the series at once. Glee, even when it gets dramatic, usually has goofy, upbeat parts. In "The Break-Up," though, the FOX dramedy really focused on the drama, making for a great, though very sad, installment that did not feel like Glee at all.

Season four of Glee has brought a lot of maturity with it. A number of the characters have moved on to the real world beyond their small town and, because of that, the issues they deal with are a bit more serious than the stuff they worried about in high school. Couples broke up all the time in the first three seasons. But in making the emotions so much more raw this time around, and packing so many splits into one episode, it meant so much more.

The music also went more soulful for "The Break-Up." From "Barely Breathing" to "Give Your Heart a Break" to "Mine" to "Don't Speak," blow after blow kept coming. Music can really sell a story in a way sometimes straight dialogue can't, as Santana (Naya Rivera) basically says in the episode. By the time eight voices performed "The Scientist," you would have to have no heart not to be moved.

Yes, it's true that most high school sweethearts do not end up married and spending their life together. This is a fact of life that television often fudges to satisfy viewers, who want to see the couples they've invested in make it. Three such pairings existed on Glee among the various students, and all three are no more. Will these break ups stick, as they most likely would in the reality? Or will the pressure of keeping the fans happy mean that some or all of them will come back together soon enough?

The most likely couple to reunite is Blaine (Darren Criss) and Kurt (Chris Colfer). Like all of the other duos, distance is their main issue, with Blaine trying to make his senior year meaningful, and Kurt neglecting his boyfriend in favor of building a career and making professional connections. It would be very difficult for them to reunite under the current circumstances. But with no immediate replacement prospects for either of them, and Blaine likely finding New York a suitable post-high school destination, it could be only a matter of time before they're back together.

Which is not to say that it will be easy for them to reconnect. Like at McKinley, Blaine would be moving to be near to and follow Kurt. Kurt would already have the established life, and Blaine would have to try to fit into that. It's not ideal, and it's not fair that Blaine should make all of the sacrifices. This is the powerful sentiment behind Blaine's "Teenage Dream" reprise, and it's incredibly moving.

Rachel (Lea Michelle) has practically already moved on with Brody (Dean Geyer). It's hard to blame her, when Finn (Cory Monteith) drops off the face of the earth, and doesn't share important life developments with her. They are kind of already done before Finn shows up in "The Break-Up," and even though Rachel tries to hang on, their break up feels more like a formality than a fork in the road.

What will Finn do now? With no Rachel and no army, he is left a bit directionless. It seems logical, though completely unrealistic, that he might take the reins of the glee club while Will (Matthew Morrison) is off working on his blue ribbon panel. This keeps Finn around on the show and gives him a purpose, even though his recent classmates would probably not accept him as an authority figure, nor would a school allow a recent alum with no higher education to run the club. But, in terms of plot logistics, it makes sense.

Speaking of Will, although he and Emma (Jayma Mays) have a pretty serious fight in "The Break-Up," it seems strange that they sing "The Scientist" with the kids. Does this mean that their wedding is off? Yes, the issue between them is a weighty one that will need dealt with. But they are engaged! This is not worth canceling the union completely over. Is there a scene missing that followed that argument? If they didn't beak up, it doesn't make sense that they were part of the song.

Finally, there's Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana. Like Rachel, Brittany has other prospects in the wings, though I am not in favor of her getting together with Sam (Chord Overstreet). But she and Santana have seemed the most separated of any of the couples up to this point. Santana truly is moving on, and Brittany is left behind. As much as I root for them, this split makes sense, and is the one I think most likely to be permanent, considering there just isn't any easily foreseeable way to bring them back together.

Oh, and Jake (Jacob Artist) dumped Kitty (Becca Tobin), but who didn't see that one coming? And the characters haven't been developed enough yet to really care, anyway.

Glee likely won't change its tone forever. "The Break-Up" is probably an anomaly. And as much as I liked this installment, I wouldn't want them to shift the show this completely, losing some of the magic and humor that attracts viewers. That being said, this is a very strong hour, both musically and story-wise, and it's nice to see that Glee can do something so affecting.

It also maintains a high quality this season for the fourth episode in a row. Not all four episodes have ranked among the best of the series, but none of been total duds, either, and based on the un-eveness the show usually displays, this is a feat to be proud of.

Glee airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on FOX.

New Girl The Complete First Season new to DVD

To contact us Click HERE
Arguably last year's best new sitcom, FOX's New Girl The Complete First Season has arrived on DVD in a three disc set. All twenty-four episodes of the show's freshman run are included, along with special features.

As the New Girl "Pilot" begins, Jess (Zooey Deschanel) leaves her boyfriend. Homeless, she finds a place with three bachelors who share a spacious apartment. Coach (Damon Wayans Jr., Happy Endings), the jock, Nick (Jake Johnson), the slacker bartender, and Schmidt (Max Greenfield), the douche whose rude exterior masks a good heart. Coach is gone by episode two, but in his place, the guys' old friend Winston (Lamorne Morris), whose overseas professional basketball career has fizzled, comes home.

These guys are not boyfriend material for Jess, but after a rocky adjustment period, they all come to care very much about each other. They may not be lucky in love individually, but they all lend support where needed. Eventually, Schmidt even finds a steady girlfriend in Jess's friend CeCe (Hannah Simone).

Over the course of the season, these five well written, well acted, layered characters become like friends to those of us watching at home. They really have some neat chemistries, and while some of the plots may seem a bit stale for a sitcom, somehow they come across as fresh when played out by these particular personalities. It's hard to pinpoint exactly why this show works, other than to say that the particular combination of elements here just melds together really well. The brilliance is that the show stays simple, but remains incredibly funny by playing to everyone's strengths.

Among the best installments in this first year are:

  • "Wedding" Jess goes as Nick's date to a wedding and tries to prevent him from sleeping with his crazy ex, Caroline (Mary Elizabeth Ellis, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia). This is the true start for Jess / Nick shipper fans, many viewers of the show who root for this pair to get together (they still haven't).
  • "Naked" Winston tries to catch up on all the pop culture he missed, while Jess walks in on a naked Nick, shaking his confidence.
  • "Thanksgiving" Jess tries to prepare a holiday dinner for her crush, Paul (Justin Long, Ed), which of course, works out perfectly. Just kidding. It's a disaster.
  • "Bells" Winston joins Jess's handbell choir, and quickly proves to be better than her.
  • "The Story of 50" Jesse tries to salvage Schmidt's 29th birthday party. She is not exactly in tune with Schmidt's tastes, or how to execute them.
  • "Valentine's Day" Schmidt tries to help Jess get laid, Nick's relationship with Julia (Lizzy Caplan, Party Down) begins to crumble, and Winston attempts to woo Shelby (Kali Hawk), an ex that he wronged.
  • "Jess and Julia" Spending time together is painful for Jess and Julia, who have lots of trouble finding common ground.
  • "Control" The delicate ecosystem of the apartment is threatened when Jess encourages Schmidt to only do his share of the housework and Winston calls in Nick's debts.
  • "See Ya" The relationships between the characters grow tenuous when one of them tries to move out, but a trip to the desert helps make things clear.
There are quite a few special features included. Commentary is offered on three episodes, including the "Pilot." Deleted and extended scenes are present, as well as some alternate jokes that didn't make it on screen. There is also a gag reel, and Lamorne's audition. Finally, a featurette called "Dress Like Jess" examines the lead characters very quirky style.

If you missed New Girl last year, this is a great way to finally catch up on the comedy. After all, your friends are probably watching, so why shouldn't you?

New Girl The Complete First Season is available now.

How I Met Your Mother The Complete Season 7

To contact us Click HERE
CBS's How I Met Your Mother started out as one of the best sitcoms on television, and then sagged a bit in the middle. However, by season seven, owing to a deeper level of emotion, and some development in the characters' lives, the series had regained its momentum, beginning to build towards a climax (even though it's uncertain if that climax will happen in season eight, or nine, or...). Now, all twenty-three episodes of season seven, plus extras, have been released on a three disc set dubbed "The Ducky Tie Edition."

As year seven commences in Ted's (Josh Radnor) search for the titular mother, his friends are continuing to grow up and move on. In fact, as we see in cut scenes in several episodes set slightly in the future, Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) is finally tying the knot, before Ted no less, though we won't find out who Barney's bride is until the final moments of the season. Is it Robin (Cobie Smulders), whom is still haboring feelings for him? Is it Nora (Nazanin Bonidai), whom Barney wronged, but maintains a torch for? Or could it be the soon to arrive on the scene stripper, Quinn (Becki Newton, Ugly Betty), who understands Barney in a way that no woman ever has before?

Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall (Jason Segel) are even further into adulthood. They announce in the season premiere, "The Best Man," that Lily is pregnant. But do they want to raise a baby in New York City? It isn't long before they find a place in the suburbs. This moves them further away from their friends, hurting their social life. Is this the right decision for them?

Other events important to the lives of the gang occur throughout the season. Some ones well worth mentioning are:

  • "Ducky Tie" Barney loses a wager to see Lily's breasts, and Ted runs into old flame Victoria (Ashley Williams), sparking a "What if...?" question about his ex.
  • "Noretta" Kevin (Kal Penn) freaks everyone out when he tells them that people always choose a mate similar to their parents. Visual gags ensue.
  • "The Slutty Pumpkin Returns" Ted reunites with a mystery flirt from years ago (Katie Holmes), and Barney learns that he's one quarter Canadian. It's a good thing that it's Halloween. The horror!
  • "Tick Tick Tick" After cheating on their significant others with each other, Robin and Barney decide how, or if, they will break up with Kevin and Nora.
  • "The Rebound Girl" Barney and Ted decide that they should raise a child together. There is no way that this can possible go wrong, right?
  • "Tailgate" Marshall visits his father's grave to update him on that gang's life.
  • "The Burning Beekeeper" The story of Marshall and Lily's housewarming party is told repeatedly from different perspectives.
  • "Karma" Barney meets Quinn, a stripper who steals more than his money, and Ted seeks to fill the void in the apartment, and his life, left by Robin after she moves out.
  • "Trilogy Time" Ted realizes that he has been stuck in a rut, and wonders how he might finally make a positive change in his life.
  • "The Magician's Code" (two part finale) Lily goes into labor while Marshall is drunk with Barney in Atlantic City. Then Barney proposes to Quinn, while Ted gets a visit from Victoria on her wedding day.
This is a great batch of episodes, and is definitely proof that How I Met Your Mother still deserves its spot on the air. Rather than continuing to grow stale, the series has reinvented itself in a very interesting way, moving into the stage of the characters' lives past the carefree days of youth. It isn't a perfect year, but it's much better than several of the previous ones.

There are plenty of extras included in The Ducky Tie Edition set. Besides getting your own copy of the infamous tie with it (possibly depending on where you buy it?) , there are also deleted scenes, a gag reel, and audio commentaries on certain episodes. Featurettes include a look at writing the series, making the series, and all of the great guest stars that appear. There is also a look at Neil Patrick Harris getting his star. Very cool, and enough to satisfy

How I Met Your Mother The Complete Season 7 The Ducky Tie Edition is available now.

Kelly Armstrong: Men of the Otherworld

    Men of the Otherworld
    Kelly Armstrong
Published January 27, 2009 by Spectra
    ISBN: 0553807099
    369 Pages

    Synopsis
A six year old boy came across a werewolf and asked to be bitten, deciding it would be better than his current situation. Clayton didn't count on becoming a wild child, barely able to survive in the woods on his new wolf instincts.  Years later, someone came along and took an interest in the strange wolf-child. Jeremy tamed the little beast and initiated him into a pack of 'civilized' werewolves. Throughout time, trials, and tests of everyone's patience, eventually Clayton earned his place as one of the most loyal and fearsome members of the Pack.

    Musings
Out of all of Kelly Armstrong's Otherworld characters, the wolves are my absolute favorite. This book is a compilation of short stories surrounding the Wolf Pack's men. The best part, we find out about Clayton's childhood. How he became a werewolf, how he met Jeremy, and where and why that undying sense of loyalty was developed.

I particularly enjoyed these stories because you get to better understand the way Clayton thinks. He is a wolf, inside and out. His choices and actions are driven by instinct, but human sentimentality and empathy are not in his emotional toolkit--and that's okay.

After reading about Clayton's childhood in Infusion, Savage, and Ascension - we get to find out more about Jeremy's special abilities in Kitsunegari. In Clayton's case, we got to find out when he was bitten, but in Jeremy's we found out about how he was conceived, and where his strange powers of perception come from.

I would recommend this series of short stories to anyone already familiar with Kelly Armstrong's Wolf Pack. Overall a great read adding depth and value to the full length novels.

    Colleen Hoover: Slammed

    Slammed
    Colleen Hoover
    Published January 1, 2012 (eBook)
    ISBN: 2940014187602
    314 Pages

    Synopsis
Layken was named in a compromise between her very loving parents. Her mom wanted to name her Layla, her dad wanted Kennedy, so they took the first three letters of each and mashed them together. He mom calls her Lake. Lake is 18 and a senior in high school when her father dies in a car accident. She, her mother, and her 9 year old brother Kel are forced to move from their big ranch home in Texas to a small rental house in Michigan. She is quickly losing spirit when her new, attractive 21-year old neighbor enters the picture. There is an instant connection, but life quickly rears it's head, and there are some major obstacles keeping them apart.

    Musings
One night I woke up about 2am and I could not go back to sleep. I wanted to read something new, and found this in the Amazon top 100 romance (at #9 this week). It sounded good, but I was a little apprehensive because it's YA fiction. I asked myself, how good a romance could it be without falling into the cheesy category?  Then I read a handful of reviews and found out some tid-bits.  Call me interested.  This is Colleen Hoover's first work, and she wrote the bulk of it in a month (my guess, NaNoWrMo, considering her slam poem in book 2). Reviewers were gossiping that some of her feedback was faked, and her 5 star rating wasn't legit.  I decided this was the book to read that restless night, just to see who was right. I started in around 2:15am and finished it that same morning, setting it down only once to go pee.

First: the high rating, the quick climb, the hype - all deserved. It gets some leeway for being Young Adult Fiction, but even then, it's well written. The first person PoV takes some getting used to, and could be a little stronger, but once you sink in, you can easily get past it. The characters are awesome too. I want Lake's mom's insight, Will's patience, Eddie's confidence, and Caulder & Kel's imagination. These people are so rich, you very quickly become attached.

The story is what makes this exemplary. It didn't feel like a repeat. So often (especially right now) the new hot books are re-writes of previous success. I was starting to get the feeling I was reading the same books over and over again.  Not with this story. It has a couple of unique twists that almost catch you off-guard.  And yes - it totally made me cry. It was happy, sad, romantic, inspiring, all the default things you want a good book to be. But it was also different. The poetry aspect bothered me at first, but this isn't stuffy old Keats.  This poetry is modern day, powerful, and highly emotional - not to mention easy to understand and relate to.

This is definitely one of my must-reads. All ages, all walks of life, everyone can get something out of this series.  Highly recommended 4.5 Stars.

    Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Habits

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme hosted by our friends and the awesome bloggers at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list for us to review and then compile our own.
This week's topic: Freebie Week! (Bookish Bad Habits)What are your top ten wacky reading habits ?---------------------------------------------------------------------Mine?
    1. I dog-ear books. Yes this shames me, but I do it anyway.
    2. If I consider a book a 'keeper' I have to buy it (and it's mathcing compaions) in hardback to display on my shelves, even if I already have a copy, or multiple copies.
    3. When a book makes me anxious, I like to skip ahead to random parts and read a page or two before continuing the story, just so I know what I am getting into.
    4. I sometimes read up to 4-5 books at the same time. I have one by my bed, one in the bathroom, one at work, one in my car... the list goes on.
    5. I love to re-read books, even if I literally just finished them. Some of my favorites I have read 10 + times, others I make a point to re-read every year.
    6. Once I commit to an author, I keep reading their stuff, even if it sucks, and I know it is going to continue sucking.
    7. I always make a point to watch the film, if there is one based on the book.
    8. I have to have access to a book to read, whenever, wherever I go - even if I know I won't have the opportunity to read it. (Thank you Kindle for iPhone for not making me continue to be that weirdo with a paperback sticking out of my back pocket).
    9. I fall alseep reading more often than I fall asleep watching TV, or any other activity. (I've aquired the ability to sleep with all the lights on).
    10. I over organize my books: read, TBR, by author, by series... my bookshelves are very intimidating to others.
What are your top ten wacky reading habits?

    Synopsis
Abby Abernathy has a past she is trying to bury, so she moves to a new town with her best friend in tow, adopts a cardigan, attends college, and swears off trouble. Travis Maddox is trouble on legs. He is a womanizer, a fighter, and an anger management needing head case.  When they meet, they challenge each other in weird ways and there is an immediate friendship. A lost bet forces them to share a living space for a month and in the course of that time their friendship is cemented beyond their expectations. Then come the challenges of other people, underground fighting rings, a dangerous stint in Vegas, and a couple brushes with death. This story is a roller coaster ride of ups, downs, I love you, I hate you, I need you, breakups, makeups, and savage intensity.

    Musings
I gotta say I had mixed feelings about this one. As is the trend with most successful, self-published works lately– the story was freaking awesome, but the flow, editing, and general organization left something to be desired.

I liked that the book didn’t gloss over how couples fight, how they can love each other to death – but simultaneously hate each other. The characters were emotional, the reactions believable, and the writer actually put time into building a connection between the two main characters!!!  Yes – interaction, budding relationship, a lasting connection observed over time!  It may have been destined, and they had the same instant earth shattering connection as other fictional couples – but like real people, they weren’t declaring their undying love by day 2. I really appreciated that, and it in no way took away from how powerful their relationship was.

However – this tale was a bit creepy. I think the roommate sums it up exceptionally well…

“Do you know what co-dependency is, Abby? Your boyfriend is a prime example, which is creepy considering he went from having no respect for women at all to thinking he needs you to breathe…It’s dangerous to need someone that much. You’re trying to save him and he’s hoping you can. You two are a disaster.”  - Kara, pg. 232.

The hero(?) is Travis Maddox, a overprotective, violent, moody, intense, manic, crazy person. Oh and did I mention codependent?  He fights in an underground fighting ring, over-reacts to every threat to disturb his precious girlfriend’s peace, and should have been arrested on assault charges at least 3 times in the course of the book. I’m a little worried about how this will make young readers feel/act. I can sense that it is honest. These people could be real, their pasts make them what they are and allow them to accept each other – but in no way should the general population think irrational violence is in any way good or romantic. A younger reader may romanticize the fights, but a jaded person can recognize that sometimes crazy needs crazy to be happy – but that doesn’t make them any less crazy.

The Vegas/Mob bit was interesting, but felt out of place with the entirety of the story – probably not necessary. The writer could have found other ways to motivate the characters and give them back story without mucking up the roller coaster ride that is this book.

I really enjoyed it, and might recommend it to others who like similar stuff - 3.5 stars.

    Synopsis
Jacqueline (don’t call her Jackie), followed her high school boyfriend to college. She is musical and very talented, but she chose to follow love over logic. Kennedy is her first boyfriend.  He’s political, handsome, and a bit selfish.  When Kennedy breaks up with her to ‘sew his oats’ in college, Jacqueline is heartbroken.  But then, her eyes open…

Lucas is the broody, artsy, bad boy in her class, who she finds actually has a sweet, dedicated and hardworking demeanor. Landen is the smart econ tutor; he’s engaging, funny, and truly interested in Jacqueline, but she’s never met him in person.  All their communication has been via email. Buck is the jerk, Benji the friend.  With all these men swirling around her – Jacqueline has a lot to figure out.

    Musings
Easy was a smooth ‘easy’ read (I know, overdone puns are awful, right?).

After just coming off a couple of roller coaster plot lines – this book was a relaxing switch. It wasn’t slow, but the dramatic and shattering ups and downs were softened.  A boy with a troubled past, innocent girl, attraction, secrets… all makes for a good story. This one was sweet and calm, and where I am so used to the dishonesty being the reason the relationship screws up – these characters were crazy honest with each other and worked through things with logic and realism.

The tragedy in Lucas’ history was shocking, and I was surprised to find it at the root of a romance novel, but the author handled it well.  This book has a definite message – one powerful and exceedingly important to women everywhere.  Don’t dismiss it.

I would recommend this book to all my girlfriends. It was really good. 3.5 Stars

What's Left of Me (The Hybrid Chronicles, #1)What’s Left Of Me
    By: Kat Zhang
    Release Date: September 18th
Summary - Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t… For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable–hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet…for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

Review – I loved this novel! The whole idea of it was so completely odd, that two people could
exist within one body, but it was really good. Instead of saying “I lifted my head”, it would
say “We lifted our head” because everything involved two people, so that was cool, different.
The personality of each soul was unique, to the point where I could like one and not the other.
The characters were so likeable and I grew quite attached to some of them. It makes me want
to know what it’s like to live in a world like that, where everyone is born with a brother or sister
inside of them. There would be no privacy, no escaping an argument or running off to your
    room.

With Eva and Addie, the differences between them were large. Eva was intelligent and quiet,
mostly because she had to be. She had to fight for control of her own body. Addie was the
dominant soul, talkative and used to being in charge. They could think twice as fast as non-
hybrids and multitask well, with two brains working at once. Their arguments were few and far
between, but still stressful, for me and them!

Halfway through, the book began moving so quickly that sometimes I had to double check that
I hadn’t skipped a page. That was both a good and a bad thing… it was exciting and suspenseful,
but then at times I was confused. Other than that, I really had no problems with it and I

would recommend What’s Left of Me to anyone. The ending was surprising, but not fairy-tale
happiness or Hunger Games suspenseful. It is part of a trilogy, and the first one isn’t released
until September, but I’m already impatiently waiting for the sequel!

    Review by Kelli!
    Beta (Annex, #1)Beta
    By: Rachel Cohn

    Release Date: October 16th 2012

    Publisher: Disney Hyperion
    Source: ARC from BEA

Summary - In a world constructed to absolute perfection, imperfection is difficult to understand—and impossible to hide. Elysia is a clone, created in a laboratory, born as a sixteen year old girl, an empty vessel with no life experience to draw from. She is a Beta, an experimental model of teenaged clone. She was replicated from another teenage girl, who had to die in order for Elysia to be created. Elysia's purpose is to serve the inhabitants of Demesne, an island paradise for the wealthiest people on earth. Everything about Demesne is bioengineered for perfection. Even the air there induces a strange, euphoric high that only the island's workers—soulless clones like Elysia—are immune to.At first, Elysia's new life on this island paradise is idyllic and pampered. But she soon sees that Demesne's human residents, the most privileged people in the world who should want for nothing, yearn. And, she comes to realize that beneath its flawless exterior, there is an undercurrent of discontent amongst Demesne's worker clones. She knows she is soulless and cannot feel and should not care—so why are overpowering sensations clouding Elysia's mind?If anyone discovers that Elysia isn't the unfeeling clone she must pretend to be, she will suffer a fate too terrible to imagine. When Elysia's one chance at happiness is ripped away from her with breathtaking cruelty, emotions she's always had but never understood are unleashed. As rage, terror, and desire threaten to overwhelm her, Elysia must find the will to survive.

Review – Yeah, it’s a long summary. I really enjoyed this novel, and I love the cover. In the first couple pages, I was distracted by all the big words and complicated vocabulary… but I got the hang of it. I stayed on the couch all day reading because I couldn’t put it down. There was constant action and suspense, front to back. The characters were all so believable and real and modern. And, of course, there was the complicated love triangle. This one was… different, though. Confusing.

Elysia isn’t the same as the other clones, and she tries to hide that, until she realizes she isn’t the only one who is different, which leads to one of her loves. Rachel Cohn did an exceptionally good job surprising me, several times. I believed one thing throughout half the story, and then realized that it was a complete lie. And on the last page, I was stunned! The final sentence left me rethinking the entire book. I wanted the sequel immediately, which sadly wasn’t an option… Anyway, Beta comes out in October, and I definitely recommend reading it!It’s a book that stays with you.
